Long Length Dimensions

As wood loses or gains moisture, it will shrink or swell until it reaches equilibrium with the constantly changing level of moisture in the air of its immediate environment. All lumber benefits from some degree of “seasoning”, i.e. letting it adjust to the humidity conditions of its surrounding atmosphere before it is installed.

Douglas Fir is unique among all softwood species in that it is dimensionally stable, having the ability to season well in position. Great Northern Lumber stocks over a million board feet of S-GRN with lengths up to 32′ because builders prefer to cut, nail and fasten Douglas Fir in the “green” or unseasoned condition, allowing it to air dry during construction.

Great Northern Lumber also stocks S-DRY or KD with a moisture content of 19% or less.

Great Northern Lumber inventories Hem-Fir in a variety of widths and lengths up to 32′ long. Dry or Green it is quite literally one of the most elegant and versatile softwood species on the market today.

It can be as light or lighter in color than some of the Western pines and is often considered, by those seeking a strong wood with a very light color, as the most desirable of the Western softwoods.

Hem-Fir lumber products are available in structural, appearance and remanufacturing grades. In strength properties, Western Hem-Fir is slightly below Douglas-Fir-Larch species combination, and above both the Douglas Fir-South and Spruce-Pine-Fir (South) species combinations.

We have more forests today than we did on the very first Earth Day in 1970.
