Superior Paintability In A
Multi-Use Overlaid Plywood Panel
rezon® MDO (medium density
overlaid) plywood is a multiple-use industrial panel whose
surface provides superior paint-holding characteristics and is
highly resistant to chemicals and weather when properly
coated. For over four decades, Crezon® MDO has been used for:
boat hulls and structures, truck doors, signs and displays,
pickup truck floors, rental trailers, barricades, soffits,
gable ends, siding, commercial building fascia, agricultural
animal confinement structures, screens and fences, garage
doors, factory and warehouse wall liners, ducts and troughs,
cabinets and specialty crating. Wherever a smooth, easily
painted, durable surface is required, Crezon® MDO is a superb
choice.
General 1. Crezon's smooth surface is
obtained by sanding the plywood substrate before the overlay
is applied. This "two step" process results in less face grain
show-through for better looking finishes. 2.
Crezon's Medium Density Overlay provides just the right
"tooth" for rapid, even paint application, so less material is
required per coat. It is the preferred panel when long-lasting
paint or coating performance is required. Coverage is so
uniform that in most cases a primer and a single top coat are
sufficient for years of trouble-free performance. 3.
Olympic Panel manufactures its own overlays and plywood, so quality
is assured throughout the production process.
Standards All Olympic Panel Crezon® MDO Panels meet or
exceed the exterior-grade plywood requirements of U.S. Product
Standard PS-1 and bear the exterior grade-trademark of the
American Plywood Association. Panels are produced with B-grade
faces and C-grade inner plies. The overlay may be specified on
one or two sides. Olympic Panel can also design a panel core
configuration to meet specific end use requirements.
Structural Qualities Crezon® MDO exceeds the
structural qualities of most grades of raw plywood. Compared
to particleboard and wafer-board it is stronger, stiffer, has
better racking resistance and resists creep better. For
structural calculations refer to APA Design Specifications for
engineering details and formulas.
Features and Benefits . Has a higher strength to
weight ratio than reconstituted wood panels. Limits checking
and weathering by masking the grain of the raw wood. .
Overlaid surface increases performance and durability of
plywood, yields smooth, splinter free surface ideal for
painting. . May be used as substrate for special
industrial coating systems. . Can be pressure-treated with
preservatives or fire retardant chemicals by wood treating
companies. . Withstands extremes of temperature, water and
ultraviolet when properly coated. . Resists
chemicals-diluted acids, mild alkalies, etc.-when properly
coated.
Finishing Crezon® MDO panels take paint uniformly
with good chemical and mechanical adhesion. Paint lasts
approximately three times longer compared to raw plywood under
normal weathering conditions. Use top quality coatings and
follow manufacturer's instructions. Avoid oil base stains,
shake and shingle paints. All edges should be sealed.
The prime coat is the most important coat. Oil/alkyd
primers are recommended; latex primers also work well. The
surface should be clean and dry before painting. No other
surface preparation is needed. Do not apply too thin a prime
coat. The primer should be applied to yield about 1 mil dry
film thickness. Apply within the spreading range recommended
by the manufacturer to obtain proper thickness.
Top Coats Once Crezon® MDO has been properly
primed, it may be top-coated with a variety of finishes
including solvent-thinned and water-thinned paints and
enamels. To insure compatibility between the topcoat finish
and the primer, both should be from the same manufacturer. For
best results, follow the manufacturer's application
instructions. Some finishes should not be applied to Overlaid
plywood. These include automotive primers and enamels, lacquer
undercoats and topcoats.
Edge Sealing The most vulnerable portions of
overlaid plywood are the edges. Because they absorb water
which can lead to finish and surface deterioration, the edges
require the most effective protection. Two coats of edge
sealer must be applied for adequate protection against
moisture penetration. Any conventional method of application
may be used as long as adequate coverage is obtained.
